Recently attended masks are less effective.

چکیده
Much work has been done to investigate participants' ability to detect repeated targets, but the presentstudy examined the influence of recently attended stimuli on target masking. Participants performed a target identification task in which the item that masked the target was either a recently attended item or a novel item. When it was identical to a previously attended stimulus, the mask was rendered considerably less effective. We have termed this effect a repeated mask reduction (RMR). This simple manipulation resulted in a large, reliable effect on the efficacy of visual masking in a single-target identification paradigm. In Experiments 1, 2, and 3, we demonstrated the basic effect and noted that the RMR increased as task difficulty increased. Experiments 4 and 5 suggested that attention to the first instance of the mask was crucial to this effect by showing that the magnitude of the RMR was unaffected by repetition of nonmask distractors and that the magnitude of the effect was reduced when less attention was paid to the first instance of the mask.

Is the use of a mask useful in the prevention of covid-19 disease? An Evidence review study
Background and aims: Coronaviruses are important pathogens in humans and animals. In late 2019, a new coronavirus was identified as the cause of a group of pneumonia cases in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. The disease spread rapidly, resulting in epidemics in China and reports of sporadic cases worldwide. In February 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) identified COVID-19, which stands for...

Deficits in the early stages of visual information processing have consistently been found on the backward masking task in patients with schizophrenia, but the nature of this impairment remains unclear. Pupillography was used to measure attentional allocation during visual backward masking task performance in patients with schizophrenia (n=16) and nonpsychiatric controls (n=16). Schizophrenia p...
متن کاملProfessional and Home-Made Face Masks Reduce Exposure to Respiratory Infections among the General Population
BACKGROUND Governments are preparing for a potential influenza pandemic. Therefore they need data to assess the possible impact of interventions. Face-masks worn by the general population could be an accessible and affordable intervention, if effective when worn under routine circumstances. METHODOLOGY We assessed transmission reduction potential provided by personal respirators, surgical mas...
متن کاملRespiratory protection provided by five new contagion masks.
The effectiveness of five recently developed contagion masks in filtering air-borne particles (1 to 5 mu diam) has been reported. One mask, available in four sizes, was 99% efficient. This mask can be reused after sterilization. The other four masks are available in only one size and are intended to be used one time only. Two of these four disposable types were more than 90% efficient but the v...
متن کاملEfficacy of 3-Layer Felt Masks Containing Polypropylene Membranes in Particle Filtration with SARS-CoV-2 Size Range
Background and Aim: The use of a mask is an effective measure to reduce the transmission of Covid-19. Today, due to the lack of N95 masks and medical masks with good performance, felt masks are widely used due to their ease of manufacture and low cost. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of 3-layer felt masks containing polypropylene membranes in filtering particle size in ...
